our story

Estonia celebrates many important birthdays this year. The Republic of Estonia will be 95 years old, 25 years will pass from the Singing revolution as well as the first Estonian rock festival with foreign artists – Rock Summer.

What happened 25 years ago August 26 to 28 on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds was something unheard of – the first ever rock festival in Estonia and the whole former Soviet Union with foreign artists, huge stage, professional sound and lighting systems. Estonians had never seen anything like that even through their “window to the world” – Finnish TV. It was a three-day celebration that made peoples’ hearts sing. For the first time in more than 40 years Estonian blue-black-white national flag was hoisted in the radio tower of the Song Festival Grounds, people dared to shout “Freedom for Estonia!” out loud and sing tears in the eyes and lumps in the throats the “ Five Patriotic Songs“ written that same spring by Alo Mattiisen and Jüri Leesment.

Today, 25 years ago, not many believed that Estonia would one day be free and independent, that the blue-black-white flag would be once again hoisted in the tower of Tall Hermann, that a sovereign currency would be put into effect or that spontaneous night-singings would gather tens of thousands of people to the Song Festival Grounds.

How many truly believed, 25 years ago, that in 1988 right there on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, a real rock festival would take place? Not many... but never the less, it did happen!

How many truly believed, 25 years later, that in 2013 right there on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, a real rock festival would take place again, to create once more that indescribable feeling that people felt back then? Not many... but never the less, it will happen!

So – the non-profit society Summeri Korraldamise Klubi and the former organizers of Rock Summer festivals have decided to commemorate the festivals that took place on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds in the years of 1988–1997 with a 2-day festivity called Rock Summer 25. So that former festival-goers and performers could once again feel that indescribable festival feeling, bring along their children who now can bring along children of their own and why not even their parents and together experience and make history.
